If it weren’t for each of our team members here at Prodigy, we wouldn’t be able to provide precision engineering and a high quality product for our customers. We like to take the time to focus on our employees and give you a look at what goes on inside our doors.
A Mechanical Career in Southern Indiana
Eric has been with the Prodigy family for 15 years and works as both an EDM Operator and Operations Manager. Eric lives very close to where he grew up between Owensville and Poseyville, not a far drive from Prodigy’s location in Haubstadt.
With Eric’s mechanical background, it’s no surprise to us that in his spare time he likes to tinker with cars, like his Mustang, participate in car shows and help out friends making specialized parts.
“I love making stuff,” Eric says. “Now that I’m a bit more hands-off with my management role at work, this has allowed me to continue to fabricate and make things, both for myself and others.”
Eric’s Role At Prodigy
On a day to day basis, Eric oversees lean manufacturing at the plant, from using cutting tools to programming machinery to making custom parts for customers. He moved into the role about 3 to 4 years ago when he really took the initiative to stand out, take responsibility and lead his team in daily operations.
“I love working with my team because I know I can rely on them for their opinions and input when I need it,” he commented. “That’s important because we try to standardize and refine operations procedures as much as possible, to keep the quality and timeline appropriate for the specific customer we are working with. We make the machinery and technologies fit into our ‘Prodigy’ process. And we pull our experience and knowledge together; it’s not very often that we’re stumped on how we’re going to do something.”
After working in other factory settings, Eric says he’s found his place. “We’re competing with large tool shops,” Eric said. “So, I’m still getting the big business experience, but there’s just a great culture here. We work directly with the owner, and we all get to have a say - whether it’s new equipment or a new team member.”
Every day is different and interesting and there are a variety of roles - some are extremely specified with experience required, whereas others are more broad, giving you the ability to be engaged in different departments.
And, when it comes to the type of people that are welcomed to the Prodigy team, Eric says, “We’ve got different backgrounds, with varying degrees. Some have associate degrees, while others have general high school degrees. It just shows that we don’t look at a piece of paper. We look at the type of person you are and if you’re willing and able to learn.”
